The
touchpanel is constructed of a glass substrate (up to 2mm thickness) and
a front polyester membrane separated by microdots. An ITO layer on both
surfaces provide a transparent yet conductive surface, connections to
each layer being oriented in X and Y planes. Applying pressure to the
front of the touchpanel causes contact between front and rear layers,
by using a potential divider technique the position of the touch can be
resolved. The touch controller converts the analog signal into 8 to 12
bits of digital output for each axis.

Touch Controllers are available for both 4 and 7 wire
touchpanels, with RS232 or USB Interfaces. Drivers for windows based O/S
allow the touchpanel to emulate a mouse.
